Studying genetic mutations in populations can reveal the essential protein functions and protein interactions, the phenotypic effects, related to physiopathologies in infectious diseases. Characterization of the genetic mutations at the levels of frequency and gene loci, at the geographical distribution can predict how these mutations can protect the host or favour an infectious disease. The resulting metabolic acquisition or modification represents a source of inspiration for medicinal chemists.
